The importance of credibility Blog #9

If there is one thing that English 102 has taught me is that if any source is to be treated seriously, it must be credible. Credibility is what a source of information has when it is backed up with refutable resources. What this means is a source, such as a informational video, a article, a book, or anything of the like, has their information fact-checked and unbiased. In the modern world we are blessed with a plethora of information in our back pocket, unfortunately that information is of no use if it's not factual.

While on the topic of the modern world, there is so many ways to access access information, but easily one of our favorites as a society is social media. At the push of a couple buttons, we have access to boundless information but here is where that goes amiss. On the internet anyone can say anything they want to, regardless if it's factual or not. A recent example of this happening is the events following the election. What was so significant about this election was everything: a woman was running beside an angry, unintelligent felon, and our nation picked the angry, unintelligent felon.

It wasn't long after he got into office that things started to take a turn, and of course, the people got angry. Not only did the people get angry but two sides of a coin formed: because of the people's anger, they have turned to the social media to express their rage, but on the other side of the coin there's what social media is trying to hide. Since then it has become a beacon of propaganda with the majority of the masses infuriated that he is in office, and the people on the man in office's side trying to keep us from the truth.

Although this may seem grim, we must remember that we have to fact check for the betterment of ourselves, but to learn instead of absorb. And instead of getting offended, to check the credibility and learn the facts.

Here is a video below about how to discern a sources credibility.

  1. Credibility really is key, especially with all the information we have at our fingertips. Social media can be a great tool, but it also makes it way too easy for misinformation to spread. Instead of just reacting or getting upset, it’s so important to stop, fact-check, and learn what’s really going on. That way, we’re not just absorbing what’s out there, but actually understanding the truth.
